My Christian Reading 2017-2018

Image from Pixnio

See what I've been reading about my spiritual and charismatic quest since January of 2017.

Here's what I've read in the order I read it. I also include some thoughts and links to book reviews I've written. I will update this post with comments, links to book reviews and books I complete in 2018. Look for me to start a new post for what I read in 2019.

2017 Reading:
Title Notes
Beginner's Guide to Receiving the Holy Spirit I bought this book mistakenly thinking it was an introduction to the Holy Spirit. Somehow I missed the title word "Receiving". Turns out this was a good introduction to speaking in tongues, even though, at the time I read this, tongues scared me.
The Supernatural Thread in Methodism: Signs and Wonders Among Methodists Then and Now  A neat history of the Methodist movement. I wrote a blog post about it here.

UPDATE: This book is temporarily out of print. I have contacted the author and he informed me that he is rewriting this book and it should be out Spring of 2020. When it is available, I'll provide a link.
The Case for Christ This is one of the "back-to-the-basics" books I read. I wrote a blog post about it here.
When Heaven Invades Earth: A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles Read this one twice in 2017 - really hones in on the 2nd phrase of the Lord's prayer - "on earth as it is in Heaven". This is one of the required books for first-year AuSSM.
Forgiveness: Finding Peace Through Letting Go
Foundation for Faith (Foundation Series Book I) This is the original first part of "Foundational Truths of Christian Living" - see below
Basic Training for the Prophetic Ministry Expanded Edition This was the textbook used in the very first prophetic class I attended. It helped explain the basic concepts of the prophetic.
Sonship: A journey into Father's heart Read this one twice in 2017. It really opened my eyes to see God as a loving father. This is one of the required books for first-year AuSSM.
Building a Discipling Culture Read my blog post about it here.
The Supernatural Ways of Royalty: Discovering Your Rights and Privileges of Being a Son or Daughter of God Read once in 2017 and again in 2018. This is one of the required books for first-year AuSSM.
Culture of Honor: Sustaining a Supernatural Environment Read once in 2017 and again in 2018. This is one of the required books for first-year AuSSM.
Designing Worship Teams Found this book lying in the sound booth at my church and so I read it to get ideas.
The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts
The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind: Access to a Life of Miracles Read once in 2017 and again in 2018. This is one of the required books for second year AuSSM.
You May All Prophesy Read once in 2017 and again in 2018. This is one of the required books for second year AuSSM.
Strengthen Yourself in the Lord: How to Release the Hidden Power of God in Your Life Read once in 2017 and again in 2018. This is one of the required books for second year AuSSM.
The Veil Read once in 2017 and again in 2018.
Hosting the Presence: Unveiling Heaven's Agenda
Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire: What Happens When God's Spirit Invades the Heart of His People
The Supernatural Power of Forgiveness: Discover How to Escape Your Prison of Pain and Unlock a Life of Freedom
Questions of Life (Alpha: A Practical Introduction To the Christian Faith, Includes Study Guide) This is one of the "back-to-the-basics" books I read. For me, it came across as a very gentle introduction to Christian beliefs.
Experiencing Father's Embrace This is similar in content to the Sonship book (above).
Who Switched Off My Brain?: Controlling Toxic Thoughts and Emotions I first learned of Caroline Leaf by watching Sid Roth's It's Supernatural on TV. This is an interesting book that shows the link between the spiritual and the physical, between our thoughts and emotions and our physical bodies.
Foundational Truths For Christian Living: Everything you need to know to live a balanced, spirit-filled life This is one of the "back-to-the-basics" books I read. This is a very in-depth book that covers the foundations of Christianity as based on Hebrews 6:1-2. This is a book that I recommend if you want a serious study.
The Happy Intercessor This book changed everything I thought I understood about intercessory prayer. If you have the heart to pray for others - I highly recommend this book.
Experiencing the Heavenly Realms Expanded Edition: Keys to Accessing Supernatural Encounters Judy Franklin's book describes her experiences with actually visiting God in Heaven. I found it very encouraging in explaining some of my own experiences and leading me to more encounters.
Shifting Atmospheres: Discerning and Displacing the Spiritual Forces Around You As believers, we are supposed to transform our world. This is one of the ways we can carry the Light and Salt and Leaven in the world - by shifting the atmosphere and allowing the Holy Spirit to be present everywhere we are.
Gods Generals Volume 1: Why They Succeeded and Why Some Fail This is a first in a series of books about Christian leaders, pastors, and theologians throughout history. This book focuses specifically on leaders in the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century. Not all were successful, as the title suggests.
Leadership Essentials: Practical Tools for Leading in the Church
There Is More! (Reclaiming The Power Of Impartation)
A God-Shaped World Written by a friend of mine - Steve Langford - this book addresses the topic of "The Kingdom" as presented in the Gospels.
After the Ambush Curses are real. This book provides some insight into why Vietnam was a difficult war - US Soldiers were cursed by their enemies and brought those curses home. I wonder how many of our current conflicts are not just "physical" wars but also "spiritual"?
A Practical Guide to Evangelism-- Supernaturally

2018 Reading:
Title Notes
Acts 29: 50 Days to Invite the Holy Spirit An interesting prayer devotional written by a UMC pastor. It essentially prays the book of Acts over 10 days and then repeats. In each section, you are praying for the Holy Spirit to recreate now what He did with the early Disciples as described in the book of Acts.
4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice Mark Virkler uses a passage from Habakkuk 2:1-2 as a framework for hearing from God. It's a pretty simple set of 4 steps, but the book is full of different examples, explanations, and testimonies for those of us who need more details. For those of you who don't need the details, here are the 4 keys:
1. Stillness
2. Vision
3. Spontaneity
4. Journaling
Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God Wow! This book talks about how crazily our God loves and pursues us. However, it goes a step further and suggests that we should pursue our God in a manner that is just as crazy. This craziness doesn't come cheap.
The Forgotten Way Meditations: The Path of Yeshua for Power and Peace in This Life This is one of the few books I would call "AuSSM Year 1 in a book".
The Worship Writer's Guide
Finding Your Song
The Presence Based Church Terry is a Methodist pastor who has a gift for prayer and spirit-filled life. This book is about having a church that is focused on the priority of God's presence within the body. A good read.
The Priestly Prayer of the Blessing: The Ancient Secret of the Only Prayer in the Bible Written by God Himself This book looks at the Hebrew behind Aaron's blessing. Brings a whole new understanding to "May the Lord bless and keep you..."
Hosting the Presence Every Day: 365 Days to Unveiling Heaven's Agenda for Your Life A Devotional based on Bill Johnson's book, "Hosting the Presence" - also a good read.
The Supernatural Occurrences of John Wesley You can purchase this book on Amazon, however, the author has a free PDF version on his website. The link I provided takes you to the author's book page on his website.
The Practice of the Presence of God the Best Rule of a Holy Life A Christian Classic by Brother Lawrence. I've linked to the free Kindle edition from Amazon.
Singer of Six Thousand Songs An easy-to-read biography of Charles Wesley. I read this as an elementary student, yet didn't grasp some of the spirit-filled encounters of Charles Wesley until recently.
Yes!?: A Field Guide for Those Answering the Call to Ministry
Secrets of the Seer: Releasing Heaven's Supernatural Realities Into the Natural World
Raptureless This book opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about end times. For me, a partial preterist view of the end times provides the believer with hope, rather than worrying if we're going to be "left behind".
The Mystery of the Shemitah: The 3,000-Year-Old Mystery That Holds the Secret of America’s Future, the World’s Future...and Your Future!

Here are the Bibles I read in 2017 and 2018:
The Common English Bible This is a recent contemporary English Bible. It is frequently used within Methodist churches. Started this in 2016 and finished in Jan of 2017.
Good News Bible: The Bible in Today's English Version This was the version of the Bible I was awarded upon my Confirmation in 5th or 6th grade. Read in 2017.
The Message Remix: The Bible In Contemporary Language I like using "The Message" for occasional reference. However, I found it difficult to "read-through" since many well-known passages and stories are worded much differently than how I know them from memory. However, I still recommend this as a companion translation. Read in 2017.
Young Readers Bible - RSV This was the version I received in 3rd grade - my first "official" Bible. Started in 2017 and finished in 2018.
