30 Days of Worship - Day 18 - June 18, 2023

Happy Father's Day!!!

Today's worship is going to take a bit of a turn in honor of all the dads out there and look to some 'Dad Rock' as worship.

The first time I heard today's song, I wept and wept and wept. I listened to it on repeat for hours and cried some more.

Then I went and searched for every remix version and listened to them on repeat, too.
These lyrics, by a famous rock band, intrigued me.

I found they were speaking directly to my soul on a spiritual level.

I Googled, 'Is this band Christian?'

As it turns out, the answer is a resounding 'YES'.
Each member of the band is a member of the Church of Ireland.

If you haven't guessed, I'm writing about U2, a favorite of mine since high school.

Why would a rock band, one of the biggest and most famous in the world, be singing not just 'spiritual' themes, but specifically Biblical themes?

As I listened to the song again, preparing for today's post, I did another Google search, "Does today's song have specific Biblical references?"

I found a reference to a 2009 RollingStone Magazine interview where Bono, the lead singer, stated he was inspired by Magnificat from the Gospel of Luke ( Luke 1:46-55 (NASB)

U2 is known for several other songs that are lifted right from scripture or make direct scripture references:
  • 'Gloria', from the 1981 'October' album, is a direct phrase in Latin, 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' - which translates as 'Glory to God in the highest.'
  • '40', from the 1983 'War' album, is a direct rewrite of Psalm 40, and we will listen to it another day.
  • 'Yahweh', off the 2004 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' album, is reminiscent of several Psalms and we'll listen to it, along with '40'.
  • 'Window In The Skies', off the 2006 compilation album 'U218 Singles', refers to love pouring down from a window in the sky. In Malachi 3:10, God says He will pour down blessings from the windows of Heaven.

I think it's important as believers to plant seeds wherever we go and appreciate that we don't have to get in people's faces about Jesus or the Bible.
Can you imagine how many seeds a band like U2 has planted without people realizing it?

Let's worship as U2 sings 'Magnificent' from their 2009 album, 'No Line On The Horizon'.

Over the next few days, I will explore other songs from the 'secular rock world'.
